Art history course next May in Florence: the Renaissance in Florence

Florence is an open-air museum and as such it should be explored by our students with the help of teachers and guides.
This 16-hour course is meant to be a journey of rediscovery of the visual arts which flourished in Tuscany in the Renaissance period, as well as a “hands-on” approach to the work of art and its complex layers of meanings and variety of interpretations. Classes and visits will be held in English from May 21st to 25th 2012.

The seminar introduces and explores the main historical-artistic trends from XIV to XVI centuries. Lessons are complemented by guided tours to museums and monuments in Florence. The time-table includes two weekly one-hour lessons and two weekly two-hour guided tours. At the end of one week students will have visited most of the more important museums of Florence such as the Uffizi, the Bargello National Museum, the National Academy Gallery, the Medici Chapels, the San Marco Museum, the Palatina gallery, the churches devoted to Santa Maria Novella and Santa Croce.

The program
Lesson 1. The 14th century
The Tuscan gothic in the religious and civil architecture: Arnolfo di Cambio. Giotto and the 14th century painters: visit to Santa Croce church.

Lesson 2. The 15th century painting
Painting in the early 15th century: Masaccio and Beato Angelico. Visit to San Marco Museum.

Lesson 3. The 15th century sculpture and architecture
The sculptors Ghiberti, Donatello and Verrocchio. The architecture by Brunelleschi. A historical walk throughout the centre of Florence.

Lesson 4. The 15th and the 16th century
Florence during the Medici dinasty: Botticelli, Leonardo and Michelangelo. Visit to the Uffizi Galery.

Lesson 5. Michelangelo and the 16th century sculptors
Michelangelo: the awfulness and the unfinished. Visit to the Galleria dell’Accademia.

Lesson 6. The 16th century painters
Raffaello and the mannerists. Visit to the Galleria Palatina in Pitti Palace.

Lesson 7. Michelangelo’s return to Florence
The new sacristy of San Lorenzo church. Visit to the Medici Chapels.
