The aim of the course is to help the student to create a sketchbook with unforgettable memories of the different landscapes and beautiful places. The course can be recommended both to Art novices and to experienced artists and professionals who intend to familiarize with the freehand drawing as well as with the perspective sketch. During en plein air sessions students will learn how to draw and paint architectural elements, landscapes, plants and trees (and wild animals if you are lucky). The following techniques can be chosen: pencil, water colour, oil painting and pastel. Practice can also concentrate on the use of colour and on the perspective method.

During the workshop the students will follow the essential steps to making a fresco: for example they will learn how to prepare the arriccio (the preliminary layer of plaster spread on the tile), the cardboard for the sinopia and the use of the pigments.

The most peculiar quality of the fresco painting lies undoubtedly in its making: the pigment - a natural material – is laid on a fresh plastesetr several times in a short lapse of time, and through a cohesion process it fixes itself in the plaster, creating warm and subtle tones.

The teacher will guide the students through the different phases of this original and ancient technique. At the end of this short but very intensive workshop, students will have acquired the necessary skills for making a fresco on their own.

For more details please visit the Fresco Workshop page or contact AdG school at info@adg.it.

All the posts have been sorted into 3 main level of knowledge of the language (according to the European common framework of reference of language learning and teaching) and have been tested in various classes of Italian for foreigners through the years at Accademia del Giglio. Many of the exercises try to put into practice the CLIL method and each of them display the subject which they focus on (tenses, prepositions, vocabulary, etc.).

The posts are listed in alphabetical order following the name of the singer.

I know that the weather question is a main topic in every country, mostly used to start up a conversation. But students are normally concerned with the weather before leaving their country because they need to pack up and choose the clothes to carry with them. My answer is always to put a bit of everything in the suitcases, since the weather in Florence can be either terribly nasty or surprisingly lovely. If we exclude the month of July, whose temperatures have always been above 30 degrees (yes, we only use centigrade in Italy) since the last ice age, and the months of December and January, which are as chilly and freezing as in most of Europe, the other months often like to joke around with the climate. No doubt that the greenhouse effect is one of the main causes of these erratic changes, but I think that are few places around the world that you can find 5 degrees in the morning and 25 in the afternoon, lots of rain or the so-longed-for sunshine. The first result of these whimsical changes is that many students catch a cold: when in the morning they see the sun from the window, they probably think of the famous song “o sole mio”, they just wear a t-shirt and a pair of flip-flops although at 8 am there are only 5 degrees and in a couple of days they go to the doctor with their health insurance (non-UE students must get one before departing from home or buy one when in Italy).
My advice is to do like the italians do: get dressed like an onion (“a cipolla”), that is with different layers of clothing: for instance a t-shirt under a jumper and a jumper under a jacket. During the day you take some of your outfit off according to the temperature. However, needless to say that “cold” and “hot” are often very subjective adjectives. I have met a sixty-year old Norwegian lady who wanted to convince me to bathe in the sea in February (don’t do that!) or an American girl who constantly turned on the air-conditioning during April. In Italy we have an old saying for April which is “aprile non ti svestire”, which means: in April do not get undressed, but which can also make you realize that clothes are definitely the best air-conditioner. I guess the kyoto protocol supporters should take this into account.

Italians make it better. We are talking about coffee of course. From the north to the south of the country coffee is a daily ritual which no Italian would ever abandon. There are two ways of making coffee: with an espresso machine and with a moka express.
Espresso machines are normally used by professional baristas in bars and restaurants. If you want to have look at one of these machines you should visit La Marzocco website
and you will also know the secrets of a good espresso, the famous 4M: M for “Mano”, the hand of the barista, “Macinatura”, the grinding of the toasted coffee beans, “Miscela”, the mixture of the different types of coffee, and the “Macchina”, the espresso machine of course.
Useful advice and tips (in Italian) are also available on www.caffe.it where you will also learn the importance of coffee in the Arts and Literature.
The express moka is one of those essential things that every Italian cannot live without it. It makes an espresso coffee which is probably less strong and foamy than the one you have in a bar, but the taste is not so different. The express moka is easy to use and it is small so that you can take it with you while you are travelling, as most of the Italians do.
Finally some word you should know about Italian coffee if you come to Italy: “macchiato”= with a drop of milk in it, “corretto” = with some whiskey or grappa in it (only after a big meal!), “ristretto” = very concentrated, “americano” = American style, “decaffeinato” = without caffeine.
