Plot: After arriving in Japan, Pinkerton, officer of the United States Marines, seduces and marries the young geisha Cio-Cio-San (which in Japanese means Madame Butterfly). After a month he returns to America with his ship, leaving the poor girl alone, though she continues to believe that one day her lover will return so that they canblive together happily ever after. Unfortunately, things don't work out. Pinkerton will return but with a new wife and with the sole intent of taking back the son that Butterfly has given birth to in the meantime. Destroyed by grief, the young abandoned wife decides to kill herself.

In this aria, the young wife sings of her hope; the trickle of smoke to which she sings is in fact that of Pinkerton's boat, which she had been wishing to see on the horizon.
